Degree Shows

I thought I would share with you some pictures from recent summer degree shows I have been to. My favourites were definitely Manchester School of Art and Central Saint Martins.

Central Saint Martins - 'Degree Show One' - undergraduate and postgraduate
At CSM I thought the paintings by Andy Flett and the charcoal drawings by Emma Vidal were amazing - these are skills that, in my opinion, are not seen as often anymore and were lacking from most degree shows. As much as I love a variety of different art forms and styles, I find it slightly sad how everything these days seems to be all about conceptual art.

I don't know what it is about portraiture or why I like it so much, perhaps because I can connect with it and can identify with the facial expressions. I find humans and their stories much more interesting, particularly in photography.

At Manchester School of Art, I loved the Graphic Design. I was never that interested in Graphic Design until quite recently and Manchester School of Art has definitely reinforced that. It has also made me consider studying it. I am also very interested in advertising and think this links in quite well.

Slade School of Fine Art - BA/BFA

Manchester University - Architecture
These models were my favourite design from the whole exhibition. I just think it's such a unique and interesting idea - I love it.

Goldsmiths - Postgraduate
At Goldsmiths I ended up taking more pictures of the building than the actual work (oops) but I found it fascinating as the building used to be a swimming pool! I later found out that this was called the 'Laurie Grove Baths'. The rooms were labelled 'small pool' and 'large pool' and the students stored work behind little rectangular doors which would have been the changing room cubicles.

AS Art Coursework

Here is some of my AS Art coursework. All of this work was done at the beginning of my AS year nearly a year ago. I will soon be uploading some of my more recent work.

Free Range Art & Design Show 2014 and Cass Art Free Thinking Talks

So I recently went to Free Range Art & Design Show 2014 at the Old Truman Brewery in Brick Lane. It was my first year attending and it definitely didn't disappoint. The exhibition took up three floors, with works from art graduates ranging from paintings, drawings and prints to installations and sculptures. Unfortunately I only got to see the July exhibitions (mainly Fine Art) and missed the June ones, meaning I didn't get to see any photography. The show gave me a lot of inspiration, making me leave with the feeling to create more of my own work. I have posted some pictures including my favourite pieces from the exhibition. I don't know who the artist is for all the pieces so there are some without names. Also, sorry if the quality is bad as many were taken on my phone.

Probably my favourite pieces.

Abigail Winter, oil on canvas, Bath Spa

Sophie Dorset, oil on canvas, Bath Spa

Jasmine Coe, oil on canvas, Bath Spa

This one was supposed to be looked at through 3D glasses

Abigail Green, photographic print mounted onto aluminium, Northumbria uni

Charlotte Lewis, wood and wool, Bath Spa

My photo of this piece doesn't do it justice - it was the most amazing, magical-like tent. Stepping into it made me think of how I would have LOVED something like that when I was a child (I still want one now).

Also at the event, Cass Art curated a series of talks from the 4th-7th July - Free Thinking. On the 5th I listened to a a talk from Libby Page from Guardian Students and Guy Armitage, the founder of Zealous. On the 6th, I went to a talk from Alex Brownless, Co-founder of ARTS THREAD and Niel Lawson Baker, the CEO of The National Open Art Competition. On the 7th I listened to talks from Susannah Bradley from Etsy, the online marketplace, and representatives Aoife Flynn and Rupinder Garcha from REcreative.

I've been to many exhibitions but this was has been one of the most insightful - I would definitely recommend going next year! I've learnt a lot from this weekend and the talks have really opened my eyes to what's out there and the different opportunities.

I've also been meaning to start my own blog for a long time but the Free Range talks have pushed me to make it now rather than later. I will hopefully be posting my own art and photography, my artistic process and developmental stages, reviews of exhibitions and other arty things.
